“We are all athletes in the game of life!” Whether it’s power walking or power lifting, any effort to improve our bodies is an athletic endeavor. This is a great time to be inspired by the athletes competing in the Olympics. Think of the commitment and determination they had to get that far. Take just a little bit of that “fire” and apply it to your health and fitness goals. Here are some tips for bringing out your inner athlete.

Eat Properly to Fuel Your Body
Athletes know how important it is to have a well balanced diet. It can improve mood, performance, energy levels and more. Think of food as fuel. Eat foods that help stabilize blood sugar and fill you with energy. Eat foods that pack a nutritional punch! Think whole grains, nuts, chicken, fish vegetables, etc.
Set Measurable Goals
No health and fitness program will succeed without setting achievable and measurable goals. Setting huge goals will seem unattainable. For example, you don’t want to set a goal to lose 50 pounds. Set a goal to lose 1-2 pounds a week. If you have never been a runner, you don’t want to set a goal to run a marathon. Set smaller goals like running a mile, a 5K and so on.
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate!
Nothing can kill your fitness, performance and energy like being dehydrated. Starting out hydrated BEFORE you exercise is the way to go. Nearly two thirds of your body is water. It is an essential nutrient involved in every function of the body. Drink water before and during your workout since you lose water while you exercise even without heavy perspiration. Add a squeeze of fresh fruit for taste if you’d like.
Dress for Success
It’s great to be fashionable while you exercise. It always makes me feel great when I look good. For women, a good sports bra is essential. How about you? What do you like to wear when you workout? My favorite place to find activewear includes Fabletics, Athleta, Old Navy and Lands End (I love their yoga pants).
Take Rest Days
Many people fear a rest day because they think it will cause a setback in their fitness. Rest is nearly as important as workouts. Rest allows your body to replenish and recharge. When you can, take the opportunity to spoil yourself on a rest day. Consider an at-home facial, take a bubble bath, get a mani-pedi.

It’s surprising how true this is. I can definitely tell when I’ve forgotten to drink some water before I left for the gym! I usually try to drink at least a pint of water before I go to the gym to “super hydrate” myself, otherwise I end up gassing out like 15 minutes into my workout.
