Diet Secret Weapon: Eat Your Peas!

Diet Secret Weapon: PeasPerhaps this diet secret weapon is something your mother told you to eat when you were little. Believe it or not, today’s diet secret of the day is, “eat your peas!”

Diet Secret Weapon: PeasI happened to see this on Spark People so I did a little more research. I must admit that I had no idea that peas were so full of vitamins, minerals, fiber and protein. Peas are often an easy way to fit get your kids to eat something healthy when all they want is chicken nuggets or hot dogs. Have you kids try frozen sweet peas as a special treat. Make eating them fun by sliding peas on each tine of their forks.
Here is some more interesting information about peas to inspire you to include them in your weekly meal plan.
  • Peas have unique phytonutrients in green peas also provide us with key antioxidant and anti-inflammatory benefits.
  • Recent research has shown that green peas are a reliable source of omega-3 and omega-6 fats
  • Their fiber aids your intestinal track and may help lower cholesterol.
Here is one use of peas that I really enjoy: Mix them with chicken, diced onions and almonds to make a delicious, and colorful chicken salad. They are also yummy mixed in with onions and bacon in an omelet.
Do you like peas? What’s a recipe you enjoy using peas?

We go through tons of peas. My daughter is 11 and loves to eat them frozen right out of the bag! Crazy, right? But she has been doing it since she was 2!

  15. Patty says:

It’s funny, I have never cared for peas. My mother always told the tale that the first time she put strained peas in my mouth as a baby I spit them out so hard that they went across the room.

Now I will eat them raw but still don’t like them cooked. When they are fresh out of the garden they have such a delightful, sweet flavor that I really enjoy in a salad. I’ll even just pop them from their pod into a bowl, add a bit of salt and eat them as a snack.

  16. Tranquil Places says:

I love peas and really never gave the nutritional aspects much thought. I have made many pastas with peas…mint and peas make a great combo. I recently made a salmon dish over a pea puree. Perhaps we should do a recipe exchange?
