Healthy eating can be challenging. Changing your lifestyle can seem overwhelming and frustrating. Summer is a great time to start fresh and focus on a healthier lifestyle. Here are a few tips to help you change your diet without losing your mind.
Eat Breakfast
We have all heard this one time and time again, but Americans continue to skip breakfast all the time. It really is the most important meal of the day. Eating a good breakfast will keep you from binging later in the day and help you maintain your energy until lunch as well. Here is one of my favorite healthy breakfast recipes.
Drink Tea
Tea is a healthier alternative to coffee and you can still get your caffeine if needed. Herbal teas are great to help ward off afternoon sweet cravings too. I love an apple cinnamon tea for this purpose. Ice tea is super refreshing all summer long. Make a big jug of your favorite tea to have on hand.
Meal in a Bowl
An easy way to make a complete meal is in a bowl. Select a protein, veggies and a complex carb like rice or potato. Add a tasty sauce to bring it all together. These meals are super easy to make in bulk so that you are all set for at least a few days. I love this Calamari and Orange Salad.
Have Fun With Your Food
My daughter and I decided to get creative with a recent veggie/hummus platter after being inspired by something we saw on Pinterest. I find that my kids are more likely to try something new when it’s presented in a fun way. Isn’t this flower scene cute?
Keep Hydrated
When I get the munchies, I often realize that a big glass of water with lemon will do the trick. Being dehydrated can lead to overeating as the signals from your brain are quite similar. If you get bored with plain water like I do, try adding fruit or refreshing additives like cucumber and mint.
Be Smart When You Treat Yourself
Completely depriving yourself of the foods you love will often cause you to binge eat. For example, I love sweet treats. For me, giving these up completely always seems to cause a setback in my healthy eating. So, when I want to treat myself, I look for options that are low calorie, but high on taste!
A current favorite of mine is the Weight Watchers® Snack-Size Peanut Butter Caramel Ice Cream Candy Bars. They are smooth, creamy and delicious! And only 80 calories per bar. Oh yeah! I love to have these as a treat after a workout or brisk walk. My husband and I enjoy the bars for dessert with some fresh berries out on our back deck.
These bars are made with peanut butter, low fat ice cream, topped with caramel and peanuts, and a milk chocolate flavored coating. Yum!!! If you follow the Weight Watchers plan these bars are only 4 SmartPoints™ value.
I found these at my local Stop & Shop. Check your local retailer to see what’s available in your area. Keep up with Weight Watchers® on Facebook for up-to-date news and information.
