I love to eat healthy meals with fresh ingredients. Trouble is, I don’t like to cook. I am the cleaner in my family and my husband usually does the cooking. When the folks at Blue Apron reached out to me to try their service, I was a bit reluctant. Since I’ve heard such good things about them from my friends, I decided to give it a try.
Setting Up an Account
The minimum plan on Blue Apron is three meals per week. The current rate is $60. I figured this wasn’t bad to replace a meals where my husband and I might dine out and spend at least that.
Blue Apron says these meals are meant to feed two people, but some of our meals could have easily fed more, especially if we added something extra to the meal like a salad. You can also opt for plans that feed four to six people.
Each week, there are 6 meals to choose from on the regular plan and 4 on the family plan.
You can select vegetarians option or opt out of any meat that you may not like or just don’t feel like for a given week. I am not a picky eater so I opted to try anything.
Blue Apron will automatically sign you up for weekly deliveries, but you can cancel at any time. You just need to provide about a week’s notice. You can also skip weeks if you are not going to be home or just want to take a break.
Delivery Service
You select from a number of delivery windows, on Monday through Friday. You can also leave special delivery instructions in case you are not home to accept the package. Our package was left in the shade next to our garage door.
The box is quite big, but that is mostly because it has a lot of padding and cold packs to ensure everything stays fresh. All of the ingredients are clearly labeled. Each meal has an step-by-step instruction card and there is also an information card for the ingredient of the week. Our week was mushrooms.
Time to Cook
As I mentioned, each meal comes with a large recipe card. The front has a photo of what your meal should look like when you are done. The back of the card has step-by-step instructions with photos as well. As a visual learner, this really helped me.
This is the way I was meant to cook! It was delightful to have everything ready to go. There was no measuring involved. The only items I needed from my own pantry were olive oil, salt and pepper.
I also loved getting the family involved in the process. My daughter made one of the meals nearly by herself. She was so excited to help.
With fresh ingredients and recipes that are typically only 500-800 calories, these are healthy meals I LOVE! I have saved the recipe cards because who knows; maybe I’ll try to so recreate the meals on my own some day. I’ll probably just order more from Blue Apron.
