My husband and I recently had the chance to visit the coastal town of Kennebunkport, Maine for our anniversary. Neither of us had ever been there so we were excited to take some time to explore. Here’s a list of our favorite things to do in Kennebunkport.
Stay in a Bed and Breakfast
Kennebunkport is full of delightful Bed and Breakfasts. Many are in very historic homes and buildings. We chose the Captain Jefferd’s Inn. It was AMAZING! We stayed in the Arundel Suite, which had a in-room fireplace and 2-person jacuzzi tub. The breakfasts were absolutely outstanding too!
Rent bikes
Kennebunkport is a very bike friendly area. Traffic can really build up during the busy summer months so you may get places faster on a bike than in a car. Some B&Bs offer complimentary bikes (ours did).
Eat, eat, eat!!
Kennebunkport is a thrill for seafood lovers. You can get a lobster roll on just about every corner. That said, explore your possibilities and don’t just try lobster. The crab and other locally caught fish are excellent. Get at least one dessert featuring Maine blueberries as well. OMG – my mouth is watering just remembering all of this food!
Book in advance or choose indoor/bar seating
During the busy seasons of summer and fall, Kennebunkport fills up quickly. You will want to book ahead for lodging and many restaurants. We used Open Table for a few restaurants. If you don’t have a reservation and there is a long wait, try to opt for bar seating, where you will often get seated much faster and most still feature the full menu. We ate at the Raw Bar at David’s and the view was nearly as good as the tables where people had to wait 45 minutes.
Take the Trolly
The town trolly makes key stops throughout the area. The trip is narrated by the driver so you’ll learn some history and fun facts about the town. It’s a good way to find your way around and decide what areas you might like to see in more detail.
Shop ’til you Drop
Local shopping is great for both suvenires and unique finds. For example, there is a jeweler specializing in working with sea glass. Even if you don’t want to spend any money, window shopping, and people watching is fun. If you want to “blend in” be sure to wear something nautical. You can’t go wrong with blue and white stripes. It seemed to be the village “uniform.”
Other trip highlights:
Walking trails at St. Anthony’s Franciscan Monastery Estate
Biking along the coast to take in all the sites
Oceanfront dining at “Ocean” at Cape Arundel Inn & Resort – with views of the Bush compound
Lunch at Arundel Wharf Restaurant – the blueberry crumble was out of this world!!
Walking around the historic Colony Hotel – gorgeous views!!
Love the renting bikes idea!! Such a great way to get around and see the local sites!! I would definitely eat eat eat tons of fresh seafood!! Yum!! Ive been wanting to visit Maine so badly!!
I have never been to Kennebunkport, but it sounds like a nice place to visit. I’d like to visit the Arundel Wharf Restaurant and try the blueberry crumble.
