Gymboss Interval Timer Review and Giveaway

gymboss interval timer

If you do anything fitness related, you have likely heard about interval training. This simply means that you vary your intensity within your workout. Probably the two most popular terms related to interval training these days are Tabata and HIIT. Each of these workout styles require a period of hard exercise followed by a period of rest. The Gymboss is an interval timer made for this type of exercise practice.

That said, this exercise approach can be applied to a variety of workouts. At, they have a lot of great ideas on how to use their interval timer. They list the uses uses to include the following exercise styles:

  • Crossfit
  • Tabata
  • HIIT
  • Cardio
  • Kettlebell
  • Weight Training
  • Running
  • Stretching and more

You are in complete control as you set your Gymboss according to the intervals you would like to follow. It is super easy to clip on to your shirt or pant like this:

My Weight Training Example

Say you want to weight train for 30 minutes. You choose your work time and your rest time. I my case, I lifted for 45 seconds and took a 15 second rest. I did 10 exercises for 3 rounds. The Gymboss alerted me to start, rest and start again. You can choose beep, vibrate, or both for the alert setting. For weight training, I liked wearing my Gymboss attached to the strap of my workout top. Its small and light so it did not get in the way.

My Running Example

I have just started back into running. I find interval running to be a great way to get my legs into shape and improve my overall performance. With the Gymboss attached to my waistband, I don’t need to worry about tracking intervals with my watch. I find interval training helps to pass the time more quickly than steady paced running. So, here is an Gymboss Interval run example:

Walk 2 minutes (warm up)

Run 4 minutes

Walk or light jog 2 minutes

Run 4 minutes

Etc. …

I will often add in a sprint or two as well.

My HIIT Example

My HIIT workouts are typically are typically 20-30 seconds of intense exercise followed by 10-15 seconds of rest. I often like to do 5 full-body exercises for 3-4 rounds. Example:

Exercise #1 – 30 seconds

Rest 15 seconds

Exercise #2 – 30 seconds

Rest 15 seconds

Etc, …

Of course it’s not rocket science, but it is fun to play around with what intervals work best for you depending on your workout choices for any given day.

I like that the Gymboss is easy to use and they have a great website for workout ideas. It is super light and portable. Sure, there are interval timer apps for your smart phones or tablets, but the Gymboss is certainly lighter and easier to attach to clothing. It is also water and shock resistant. Here are the full specifications:

  • 1 or 2 intervals – 2 seconds to 99 minutes
  • Repeat up to 99 times
  • Beep and/or Vibrate alarm
  • Alarm duration 1, 5, or 10 seconds
  • Stopwatch function
  • Secure Belt clip
  • Compact Size (1 ¾ x 2 ¼ x ½ inches)
  • Water and shock resistant
  • AAA battery required

At $19.99, I think Gymboss is a great tool for a minimal investment. Have you tried Gymboss? What do you think?
