Summer is such a great time of year. The kids are out of school and we get to spend more time together as a family. The problem is that the kids often want not-so-healthy summer treats from the ice cream truck or at the movies. My kids and I came up with some healthy snack ideas that the entire family can enjoy. We decided on a variety of Cheerios flavors to add sweetness without a high dose of sugar.
Healthy Summer Treats for Kids
Recently, we have had quite the heat wave. Staying indoors with the A/C on has been a MUST. I challenged the kids to come up with some healthy summer treat ideas of their own. We decided to use different flavors of Cheerios for each recipe.
First up, my son, who loves bananas, came up with a fun take on a banana split. He calls these Rainbow Bananas. They are super easy to make and even more fun to eat. I could barely keep them around to take some photos before he devoured them.
Rainbow Bananas
Serves 2
Ingredients
- 2 bananas
- 6 fresh raspberries
- 2 tablespoons Strawberry Greek yogurt
- 2 tablespoons fruity Cheerios
Directions
Core center of each banana. Fill with strawberry yogurt. Sprinkle Fruity Cheerios on top. Add 3 fresh raspberries to each banana treat. Enjoy!
My son is a super picky eater. I was so happy that he came up with a healthy treat that he loves. He can be proud of his creation. I’ll be challenging to come up with more healthy snack ideas as we head into the back-to-school season as well.
My daughter came up with an idea she calls “Apply Cinnamon Man.” Isn’t he cute? Apple cinnamon are two of my favorite flavors so I was happy to help her eat these as well. She had fun making this creation. She even helped take the pictures. Getting the kids involved makes them so much more committed to trying something new. This recipe is entirely gluten free as well. My daughter has a friend who has a gluten sensitivity so she is excited to serve these when she comes over.
Apple Cinnamon Man
Ingredients
- 1/2 cup Apple Cinnamon Cheerios
- 8 apple cinnamon rice crips
- 1 tablespoon organic peanut butter
- 1 apple slice
Directions
Apply the peanut butter to the rice crisps. Cover the mouth liberally with Apple Cinnamon Cheerios. Create eyes with one in the middle if each. Add an apple slice for the nose. He’s almost too cute to eat.
I was inspired by a recipe on the Cheerios website. They are super refreshing during these hot days. My kids love them too, but this first serving was all mine. LOL!
