Hope for Couples Struggling with Infertilily

This post is brought to you by The Stork OTC and The Motherhood. All opinions are my own.

It took me a while before I was sure that I wanted children. I wanted a career, my husband wanted a house and a good job. When we finally decided we were ready to start “trying,” we figured it would be easy. All of our friends were having babies. How hard could it be, right? Well, like so many couples, we struggled with infertility.

We started trying to conceive a bit later than many of our friends and family. I was 32. After 8 months of trying, my doctor suggested that we get tested for fertility issues. Both my husband and I had some challenges. The first course of action was to take a drug that would help me ovulate regularly. This was NOT fun. I suffered from hot flashes, mood swings and weight gain. Luckily, the medication along with an IUI* procedure worked to conceive my son after about 3 months.

*Intrauterine insemination (IUI) is a fertility treatment that involves placing sperm inside a woman’s uterus to facilitate fertilization. The goal of IUI is to increase the number of sperm that reach the fallopian tubes and subsequently increase the chance of fertilization.

For my daughter, we were not as lucky. I tried the same drug, and repeated IUI procedures, but we failed after 4 attempts. I decided to take a few months off the medication to give my body a rest. The trouble was that I was not approaching 36 and I really wanted another baby. We decided to try one more time with a series of injections to stimulate my ovaries even more. Believe me, sticking myself with needles was NOT fun. We were very lucky that this approach worked the first time to bring us our lovely baby girl.

So many couples struggle with infertility. Did you know that it affects 7.3 million couples in the U.S? Amazing! The time, cost, frustration, and stress can be enough to make many couples crazy. The folks at Stork OTC are bringing hope to infertile couples by giving them an at-home alternative. Here is a slightly more technical description from the makers of Stork OTC:

The Stork OTC is a home-use conception aid that combines an innovative applicator and an established conception technique — cervical cap insemination. The product can be used in private, at home, without a prescription. The Stork OTC can be a first-step treatment option for couples before more invasive procedures are considered; bridging the gap between natural intercourse and costly, in-clinic treatment options (i.e. IUI or IVF)

I certainly wish we had this option available to us when we were trying to conceive. Anything drug free that I could use in the privacy of my own home would have been ideal. It’s great that we live in a time where this type of technology continues to progress and offer more options like the Stork OTC.
