There is one thing nearly all modern Americans have in common: we sit all the time. Though our great shift towards computer-based work has done great things for productivity, it has, unfortunately, also done terrible things for our health. So what are the health issues associated with too much sitting?
From increased risk of heart disease and obesity in the long term, to sharply hampered cholesterol maintenance in the short term, the negative health effects of sitting are starting to weigh heavily against the benefits. Even the medical field – the greatest advocates and reducing sitting time – is plagued by this new health issue.
Though doctors and nurses get plenty of walking time, it usually falls to the secretaries, billers, and coders to do all the sitting. And, as we can see, something has to change.
What are your thoughts? Some say sitting all day is as bad or worse that smoking. We’ve got to keep moving people. What do you think? Infographic Via: Medical Billing And Coding

It is quite scary too but a meaningful and useful post! I would be totally ignorant of it if i miss this post!!
amen! in the age of computers and folks sitting a lot, it can lead to so many problems. my cousin died of a blood clot that went to his heart because of too much sitting at the desk / plane rides.
It’s scary to think that sitting hurts longevity even when a person exercises daily. I try to exercise for 30 minutes 4-7 days a week and sometimes I get down to 2 times a week which I know is not good for my health. But I never thought sitting in general with your work or free time was bad if you did exercise. π I did love all your graphics!! And btw I love your slogan..its never too late!
Its scary! I sit a lot at my job, but I make it a point to even just stand up for 5 minutes at a time whenever possible. I would love to have a walking workstation π Bring me a treadmill!!! Thanks for the info.
Great post! Thanks for these helpful info.
wow i had no idea it was that bad! i needto start standing while i do my work now!
Well that’s sort of a scary infographic- I learned a lot, and it makes sense that we, as humans, were NOT engineered to sit. That’s why so many of the ‘royals’ in olden times were so obese I suppose, nothing to keep them busy. I try to get up and move about every hour when working.
I have a very bad back and have to sit to make it feel better. Then I can only walk short distances and then feel it for days or get an injection. My doctor gave me some exercises to do while sitting and not sure if they are even helping. 38 and I have and 80 year old back.
This is a great post, and wake-up call. I have 3 younger kids so I do get up frequently, but I know I do not get the exercise I need to and sit more than I should. I have definitely gained wait over the past couple of years since starting to blog. Thank you for the great information! Also, I love that first picture too! lol
This is really scary. I spend a lot of time sitting because of my work. What shall I do if I don’t have any choice? I have to work! I spend almost the entire day sitting. It’s better to die having a heart attack than no food to eat. ;-p
That picture is fantastic. Haha… I’ve heard this info before, and it makes me so glad I just quit my full-time cubicle job. Life is tough without a paycheck, of course, but I’m really thinking I just might live longer, and is there anything more important than your health?
They do say sitting is bad for your health. LOL, I’m walking much of the day at work so it’s not so bad but there’s a lot of sitting when I get home though.
I agree. I’ve been trying to lose weight and got the Up Band so I could start tracking how much I was sedentary.
I’m sure I sit way too much since I work online. I’m definitely going to try to move more when I can.
Love this post- its so true. (luckily, with 4 little ones, I rarely sit!!) (and that first pic is HILARIOUS!)
I know I sit too much with my job. But I am trying to change that.
I sit all day, for hours at a time. I am trying to change this.
I about peed my pants looking at the first pick.. I am still laughing! But yes, I agree sitting is harmful! I am a waitress so I get my daily exercise at my job!
